Flash forward to March 28. Kay, Emily, Vicki, Farzeen and I flew out of Granada early Friday morning to Barcelona to meet up with some Bucknellians who are studying outside of London for House Party weekend. Barcelona is in northern Spain. The people here speak another language besides Spanish, Catalan, that seems to be a combination of French and Spanish. Fortunately, we did not have any problems communicating since everyone we encountered spoke Castilian Spanish. (Please read my previous and new entry on Sevilla, too!)
Barcelona is also a very metropolitan city with a real, international airport. The airport in Granada, on the other hand, has one tiny terminal, reminiscent of the TV show from the early 90s, Wings. We had to walk to the airplane along the runway. We didn't have to worry about other plane traffic, as we were the only flight that was taking off at that time. Anyway, Barcelona is much larger than Granada and has all the major international clothing and food chains, too.
We started our day by visiting Las Ramblas, a long street filled with street performers and venders. Some venders even sell live animals such as chickens, fish, birds, and even rabbits. I really should have bought a hen, as I love fresh eggs in the morning and hate depending on an alarm clock to wake me up, but I did not think it would fit in the overhead compartment on the airplane. Near Las Ramblas was a very cool fruit and food market where venders sold all types of fresh fruit and meat products. Again, I regret not purchasing one of the more interesting items such as a goat head or the ear of a pig.
Barcelona is also famous for its architecture. One of its best architects is Antonio Gaudi. Gaudi designed all sorts of crazy buildings including a half-completed cathedral (Sagrada Familia), an awesome park (Park Guell), and other apartment buildings scattered throughout the city. I cannot even describe his work so I will post pictures below. All of it is completely unique and fascinating. We basically did a tour of all his famous works and his museum. That wraps up Barcelona. We had a great time seeing the sights and enjoyed seeing our friends.
