As many of you know, support and development for the Eudora email
application was officially discontinued some time ago. Since then
Bucknell (along with numerous other higher ed institutions) has been
implementing other client email management solutions.
If you are still using Eudora, now is an excellent time of year to say
"Goodbye."
For Windows, Outlook has been chosen as the logical fit for faculty
and staff Windows clients. As a matter of fact, many of us have
already made the transition (and lived to tell about it!).
We have scheduled numerous opportunities to not only arrange the
transition from Eudora to Outlook, but also provide you with timely
and insightful training so you won't miss a step in the daily
management of your email. To sign up for this convenient yet awesome
opportunity, please visit:
http://www.bucknell.edu/script/ISR/Workshops/Register.asp?EventID=128
What about Mac users? We're here to help you too by transitioning you
to Apple Mail. It is very similar to Eudora in many ways, and
better. To arrange for your exciting transition, please contact
Library and IT Tech Support directly at techdesk@bucknell.edu or by
calling 7-7777 to schedule an appointment.
Eudora...parting is, indeed, such sweet sorrow.

As finals period approaches, and the library becomes increasingly busy, please take time to secure your laptop and other belongings. Don't walk away and leave your personal items unguarded, as they could be stolen! Every year, a few students are unfortunately the victims of laptop theft, which can been easily prevented.
To help you secure your laptop, the library offers laptop security devices on select study carrels on Lower Level One.
These carrels are fitted with a hook to which you can attach a laptop lock and chain to secure your computer.
Also, twenty locking mechanisms available at the Equipment Desk that will work with most laptops. In addition, you may purchase locks at the Bookstore.
Finals period is a particularly bad time to have your laptop stolen, so take a minute to secure it, or if you have to go away for even a few minutes, take it with you.
Good luck with finals!
A question that is asked frequently at the Reference Desk is, "Where can I send a fax?"
Bucknell University's Administrative Services will send personal faxes for faculty, students, and staff for a small fee. Administrative Services is located on the first floor of Marts Hall.
For more information call Administrative Services at x73757 (on campus) or 570-577-3757 (off campus).
Sending a Fax

As the saying goes, we've got some good news and some bad news.
The good news is we've taken significant steps to address the slow e-mail delivery and server timeout problems that have occurred over the past several weeks. The changes were put into place over lunch today and have dramatically improved mail delivery speed on campus.
(Pause for applause).
The bad news is, now that these changes have been made, Windows users that are still using Eudora as their mail client may not be able to send e-mail at all.
(Pause for Eudora client's grumbling and general disdain for ISR).
There is a solution!
In Eudora, please go under the Tools menu, select Options, then Sending Mail. At the bottom where is says "Secure Sockets when Sending," choose NEVER from the drop-down list. Then click OK. That should resolve the issue.
Windows clients using Microsoft Outlook should not experience any problems sending mail as a result of this improvement.
As a reminder, if you are using a Bucknell-owned computer off-campus and intend to send and receive e-mail please remember to enable the VPN software to ensure a trouble-free experience and a secure connection. For more information, please visit:

Further questions or concerns will gladly be addressed by contacting ISR Tech Support at 7-7777.
Thank you!

Students:
If you're using a program like Limewire to download music or movies, you're sharing or receiving something you didn't buy, don't own, or didn't pay for in any way. Essentially, you're transferring stolen goods. In another sense, it's like going into a store and stealing a CD.
Not only are you breaking state and federal laws, but you're violating Bucknell's policies as well.
To learn more about downloading, including why illegal downloading is bad, what could happen to you if you do it, and options for legal alternatives, read ISR's bulletin on why illegal downloading will get you into trouble.
Over the summer, we have made several improvements to myBucknell in terms of appearance, function and stability. myBucknell is your one-stop shopping place for many services - webmail, Blackboard, your library account, Banner, other campus systems and information and much more. myBucknell also has links to the most frequently used services for faculty and staff, as well as a To Do section to remind you to complete certain tasks.
While myBucknell is a convenient place to get access to these services, it's not the only way. Here are alternatives to access critical services when you need them, or if it's simply easier for you to access them outside of myBucknell.
First, on the myBucknell log in page, http://mybucknell.bucknell.edu, you'll see a list of links to specific services. Use these links whenever you like, and specifically if you are having trouble getting into myBucknell for any reason.
Webmail: http://webmail.bucknell.edu
Banner Web: https://www.banner.bucknell.edu
Blackboard: http://www.bb.bucknell.edu
Faculty and staff voicemail: http://voicemail.bucknell.edu
Ingeniux web content management: http://wcm.bucknell.edu
Next, just below the myBucknell username and password entry on http://mybucknell.bucknell.edu, you'll find a NEW link to get your Banner pin online. Once you have your Banner pin, you can get into Banner without getting into myBucknell if you need to. You'll need to know your username, BU ID number, and email password to get your pin. Once you have your pin, use the link mentioned above to get to Banner web.
Your Banner pin can also be helpful if you like to check your library account in the online catalog. Just look up your pin and then use the first four digits of your pin to log into your library account (accessible from the ISR web page at http://www.bucknell.edu/isr).
If you have any questions or require assistance with any of your passwords or your Banner pin, please stop by the Tech Desk on the first floor of Bertand Library and don't forget to bring along your BU ID.
Best wishes for the academic year!

Can you imagine losing everything on your computer?
Every song, every photo, every paper that you've ever written?
It happens every month at the tech desk. Hard drives die - usually we can recover data, but sometimes we cannot. At that point, we ask: Did you have everything backed up?
Most people do not back up their data, and there is nothing that we can do.
How can you prevent this scenario?
Buy an external hard drive, and regularly back up your data. We would be happy to help you at the tech desk with any other suggestions. Buy a drive before you need it! The Tech Desk will not restore data for computers at the desk!
Ever wondered how your office computer's data is backed up?
CommVault Galaxy is software that regularly backs up all your important files to a secure network server. Galaxy replaces Veritas Netbackup for Windows computers and Retrospect for Macintosh computers. Galaxy backs up the Documents and Settings folder on Windows computers, which includes your Desktop folder and your My Documents folder. On Macs, Galaxy backs up the Users directory, which includes your Desktop and Documents folders.
More information about Galaxy is available in Ask ISR
Telephone numbers are permanently assigned to university owned rooms. The number is located on the jack designated with a black "voice" icon. You can also locate your phone number by visiting http://www.isr.bucknell.edu/directory/
