Library Catalog Search Limits Tip

Library Users: Here's a quick tip for our new library catalog.

There is a way to limit your search of the new library catalog by category without using a specific search term. On the top portion of the "Advanced Catalog Search" page, type "#0" ("#[zero]") in the "Keyword" box. In the bottom portion, select categories for limiting your search, such as language, item type, or location.

This will allow you to see ALL items that fit certain parameters without searching for something specific.

For example, you could search for all French DVDs, by typing "#0" in the first box, and limiting the language to French and the item type to Video or DVD.

If you have questions, please ask at the Reference Desk!

Need a book that is checked out of the library?

If the book you need is already checked out to another user, try E-Z Borrow. By using E-Z Borrow, you can quickly find and borrow books from many academic libraries in Pennsylvania. The service is available to Bucknell students, faculty and staff for books unavailable or not owned by our library. Because E-Z Borrow is a direct method, not mediated by staff, it is generally faster than going through traditional interlibrary loan.

If you have any questions, please contact Interlibrary Loan at 570.577.3249

Students: You can do library research from off campus

Students: Do you have library research that you need to do from off campus? This is just a reminder that you can access many of the library's research databases from off-campus. When you click on a database link from the Databases list or a Research By Subject page, you will be prompted to log in with your Bucknell username and e-mail password.

Once you do that, you can use many of the databases like you can on campus!

Library Shifting to Make Room for New Titles

Due to overcrowding in the stacks, we are in the process of moving many bound periodical volumes from the second floor to a storage facility. The titles are all duplicated in JSTOR, the online version of the print titles.

JSTOR, which many of you have used, offers users the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were printed. You can browse back issues in chronological order or do a search. Many researchers find the search feature extremely useful, since it searches the entire text of articles.

You can access JSTOR content in many ways. Links to the individual JSTOR titles are available from the E-Journals page. Individual titles are also included in the online catalog. You can also use the link to JSTOR from the Database page on the ISR website. Your subject librarian or reference desk staff can help you with JSTOR if you have never used it.

Once the periodicals are moved, we will shift the books classified in the P-PM range to the 2nd floor. If you have any questions, please contact your subject liaison, or the reference desk. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we undertake this much needed procedure.

Why does the Interlibrary Loan Department cancel your ILLiad journal request?

Why does the Interlibrary Loan Department cancel your ILLiad request for a journal article when your own search for electronic access fails? It may be because the library owns the paper copy of the journal. This is especially frustrating if you've spent time following links, hoping to find an electronic full-text version of the article, but came to a dead end.

To check the catalog, type the name of the journal into the search box, and click "periodical title." You will see the list of volumes owned by the library.

New Electronic Resource - Journal Citation Reports (JCR)

ISR is pleased to announce that Bucknell now has access to "Journal Citation Reports (JCR)" from Thompson ISI. JCR can be accessed at: http://isiknowledge.com

The following information is taken from ISI's website:

Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive and unique resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data. JCR is published annually in two editions. JCR Science Edition contains data from over 5,900 journals in science and technology. JCR Social Sciences Edition contains data from over 1,700 journals in the social sciences.

Journal Citation Reports can show you the:

    * Most frequently cited journals in a field
    * Highest impact journals in a field
    * Largest journals in a field

Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for journal evaluation and comparison.

Please contact the library's reference desk with any questions about JCR.

Open WorldCat and Google Books

A new library catalog option gives you the choice to run a search in the Open WorldCat and Google Books finding tools.

Open WorldCat is access to the First Search database, WorldCat, which is familiar to many of you, but is being made openly available from the web. Open WorldCat checks for ownership of materials from other libraries, including local public and academic libraries. Google Books is the popular search engine's effort to provide access to full and limited views of digitized books that have been contributed by libraries and publishers. Both these finding tools will be a quick way to expand your access to information beyond the ISR library collection and can be used along with the EZ Borrow and ILLIAD interlibrary loan services.

We encourage your feedback and questions about the catalog. Please send your comments and questions to Isabella O'Neill at ioneill@bucknell.edu.
