Focus the Nation Archive of Presentations Available

On January 31, 2008, faculty, staff, students, and members of the Lewisburg community participated in a series of event promoting awareness of climate change and other environmental issues. The day's events were sponsored by the Bucknell Environmental Center. The archive features videos and PowerPoint presentations of the interdisciplinary faculty panel discussions, as well as photos of student and faculty scholarship displayed during the lunch event. The Focus the Nation archive is the first collection housed in Bucknell's ScholarVault, a digital archive of scholarly, creative, and research output by Bucknell faculty, students, and staff.

This archive of materials related to the event was built by the Library and Information Technology Department's Digital Initiatives Group and is accessible here:

Blackboard is Now Our eRes System

As we announced in several email messages (beginning in summer 2007), we have phased our our Docutek eRes system, because that "electronic reserves" functionality can be provided better using Blackboard. All courses that exist in Banner (our student information system) are created in Blackboard, and course rosters are also automatically synchronized between Banner and Blackboard each day at 6:30 AM. In other words, it's much easier for students to access your online readings using Blackboard, and your audience is automatically limited to the students enrolled in your course (among the other advantages and tools that Blackboard provides).

If you haven't yet uploaded your eRes readings into Blackboard, you need to do so as soon as possible, since we aren't turning on any courses in eRes this semester, and the server itself will be unavailable soon.

We have instructions on how to move course materials from eRes to Blackboard at:

Moving Readings from ERes to Blackboard.

If you have any questions about the process of uploading PDF files (and other documents) into Blackboard, please send email to ITEC. We'll be happy to help you as you make this transition from eRes to Blackboard.

ScienceDirect provides access to hundreds of Elsevier Journals online

We are very pleased to report that ISR has negotiated a contract with Elsevier for access to their ScienceDirect online journal archive, effective immediately. All of the Elsevier journals subscribed to by Bucknell University will now be available online, from 1995 to the present issue. In addition, all of the Elsevier journals currently owned by any of the libraries in our consortium, PALINET, will also be available to us.
Our license will now provide online access to over 800 journal titles in all fields of science and engineering, and a number of social science disciplines. Look for the green "full-text available" icon when searching ScienceDirect to be able to download a pdf version of the journal article.
Currently the journals can be searched from the ScienceDirect.com web site, or by using the Scirus.com web browser. We have also created links from our Electronic Journals list to the ScienceDirect titles.

New Science & Engineering info resource---and a contest too!

Read a good "Knovel" lately? Bucknell now has online access to the Knovel Electronic Library (www.knovel.com), a collection of over 800 books and databases of science and engineering information. Besides being able to browse the titles or search the entire Library, Knovel includes productivity tools (interactive tables, graphs and live equations) that allow users to work within Knovel to analyze the data they find.

And to make things more interesting, Knovel is now offering the "University Challenge." Students can navigate to http://www.info.knovel.com/challenge/ and answer 5 questions using the tools in the Knovel Library. Correct answers will enter you in a drawing for iPod prizes, and the chance to win a $1500 scholarship.

Knovel puts important reference books like Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook, Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, and Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers right on your desktop computer. Any Bucknell student, staff, or faculty member can access the Library from a networked computer. Try it out and win the Challenge!
