Library Exhibit: Senior Book Dedication

Each year, the Library & Information Technology department recognizes the valuable contributions made by our graduating student assistants by dedicating a book to the Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library in their name. The book is of the student's choosing and contains a uniquely designed bookplate with their name and class year. In addition, the permanent catalog record of that book includes the student assistant's name as the person honored by the dedication. Through the Bertrand Library online catalog, you can enter the student's name as a keyword search and access the record of the book dedicated to him or her. We celebrated the book dedication at a ceremony in the Library's Traditional Reading room on April 18. You can view the program created for the ceremony. Stop by the Library lobby to see the exhibit cases containing all of the books dedicated this year. We will keep these exhibits up through Commencement weekend so that our graduates can bring their families in to see the book dedicated in their honor.

Secure your laptop in the library!

Students:

As finals period approaches, and the library becomes increasingly busy, please take time to secure your laptop and other belongings. Don't walk away and leave your personal items unguarded, as they could be stolen! Every year, a few students are unfortunately the victims of laptop theft, which can been easily prevented.

To help you secure your laptop, the library offers laptop security devices on select study carrels on Lower Level One.

These carrels are fitted with a hook to which you can attach a laptop lock and chain to secure your computer.

Also, twenty locking mechanisms available at the Equipment Desk that will work with most laptops. In addition, you may purchase locks at the Bookstore.

Finals period is a particularly bad time to have your laptop stolen, so take a minute to secure it, or if you have to go away for even a few minutes, take it with you.

Good luck with finals!

Faculty and Staff: New protection for Windows machines

Faculty and Staff:

Technological threats in the form of viruses and malware have become more prevalent. As a result, ISR has taken steps to increase the protection of your Bucknell-owned Windows computer.

Beginning this week, we will remotely "push out" a new anti-virus and anti-spyware program called Sophos. It will replace the Symantec Antivirus and SpySweeper software packages many of you are running today.

What will you notice? The gold shield and the crosshair icon (if you have one) will disappear from your taskbar in the lower right-portion of the screen. It will be replaced by a "pretty blue shield" that is striped on the left and solid on the right.

What do you need to do? That's the best part! Not much. All we ask is to make sure your computer is connected to the wired network over the next few weeks. (Sophos cannot be installed over wireless.) The installation will occur on its own without any intervention from you.

This process will take approximately two weeks. In that amount of time we hope to have successfully installed Sophos on most of your computers. We will continue to actively scan the network after this time period to catch machines we miss during this initial rollout.

Finally, we are happy to announce our Sophos license agreement allows us to extend this protection to your personal Windows computer(s) as well (much in the same way our Symantec agreement did). Please watch for future communication announcing how Sophos will be made available to you. Until then, Symantec Antivirus will continue to protect your home machine(s) as it always has until July 1st.

Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Tech Support at techdesk@bucknell.edu or by calling 7-7777.

SENIORS: PAC Deactivation

Phishing Scam - Do not provide passwords over email

In a current phishing scam that is going around on college campuses, users are asked to provide username and password information to campus IT departments.

Never provide your username and password in an email! Bucknell will never ask you to provide this information to us!

Here is a sample message type that has been going around:

"We are currently upgrading our data base and e-mail account center ... Warning!!! Account owner that refuses to update his or her account within Seven days of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently."

While we have not seen this yet at Bucknell, it is best to be prepared. Never send username and password information over email!
