Expanded Jazz CD Collection

To support a new class on jazz history taught by Prof. Phil Haynes, the Bertrand Library recently purchased the one hundred classic jazz recordings listed in Ben Ratliff's book, Jazz: a Critic's Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings.

These compact discs are located near the video and DVD collections on the library's main floor. Call numbers for the jazz section begin with "MJ", followed by the artist's name.

The purchases were supported by the Gladys Brooks Fund, a fund available to faculty for acquiring library materials for new and developing areas of the curriculum.

Four week trial of Defining Gender database

ISR is pleased to announce that we have a four week evaluation trial period for the database "Defining Gender". According to the product website, the database contains a "broad range of thematically organized documents from 21 libraries, [and] provides an excellent opportunity for comparative study and research. Manuscripts, printed works and illustrations combine to address the key issues from both masculine and feminine perspectives. They are indexed to provide ready accessibility for students by person and subject across all five sections."

The database contains reproduced images of documents spanning the years 1450-1910. It can be accessed from anywhere on campus at this URL: http://www.gender.amdigital.co.uk .

Please give it a try, and send your comments to Jason Snyder.

Blackboard is Now Our eRes System

As we announced in several email messages (beginning in summer 2007), we have phased our our Docutek eRes system, because that "electronic reserves" functionality can be provided better using Blackboard. All courses that exist in Banner (our student information system) are created in Blackboard, and course rosters are also automatically synchronized between Banner and Blackboard each day at 6:30 AM. In other words, it's much easier for students to access your online readings using Blackboard, and your audience is automatically limited to the students enrolled in your course (among the other advantages and tools that Blackboard provides).

If you haven't yet uploaded your eRes readings into Blackboard, you need to do so as soon as possible, since we aren't turning on any courses in eRes this semester, and the server itself will be unavailable soon.

We have instructions on how to move course materials from eRes to Blackboard at:

Moving Readings from ERes to Blackboard.

If you have any questions about the process of uploading PDF files (and other documents) into Blackboard, please send email to ITEC. We'll be happy to help you as you make this transition from eRes to Blackboard.

Faculty: Request a library user education session

Faculty:

The start of the semester is rapidly approaching. That means it's time to think about requesting a library user education session (or multiple sessions). Librarians are available to teach your students how to utilize the library's collections and research resources. They will work with you to plan sessions that support your curricular goals.

To schedule a session, contact your library liaison, or use this request form.
