Day one in Nicaragua

IMG_1401.jpg

After a long trip and an early wake up, we are finally here. We took a ride from the airport down through Managua. The city, still torn from the last earthquake a couple years back, offered a hint to the everyday struggle of these people.

The densely populated city of Managua is the most densely populated in the whole of Nicaragua and acts as its capital city. To tell the truth, it looked more like an expansive small town back home that just went on for miles. There was a silhouette of a tall building, but otherwise, there was an expanse of makeshift huts and crumbled buildings.

Not too long after, we arrived at the compound the Jubilee House faculty call home. A past house of the Somosan dictatorship, this compound seems like really nice place in comparison to the rest of the country. There's running water, electricity, and food, which is more that can be said for a majority of Nicaraguans. It's no surprise when we later found out that approximately 70 percent of Nicaraguans live on less than two dollars a day.

The day is coming to a close and an exciting day awaits us as we are introduced to some further learning and miscellaneous work. I'm just happy to be here finally.
