Well, apparently the end of classes and exams does not coincide with the end of my procrastination habits. This is why I'm writing my first blog entry 3 and a half hours before we'll be boarding the bus for the Baltimore airport. Despite lack of sleep, however, I am so excited for this trip. I remember being shocked last year in Waveland, MS at how little work seemed to have been done since Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast. I am hoping that a year later, much more will have been done.
I am also very excited to get to see New Orleans. We never got a chance to go last year, and I think it will be very interesting to compare the Big Easy to the small town of Waveland where we worked last year (and where we will get to spend a day on this trip). I've recently fallen in love with inner cities, and I think it will be a completely unique experience to see one in a rebuilding from scratch stage like New Orleans.
Finally, I'm just thrilled to be able to serve people in such dire need. It may seem shocking that there is still a lot of need a year and a half after the storm hit, but we're supposedly going to be gutting houses. They aren't even ready to start rebuilding. It boggles my mind how much work needs to be done. I hope to meet and get to know the people who we will be helping. The south has a very different feel than up north: people seem to be much more open and much friendlier. I've definitely grown to appreciate southern hospitality! So for now, I'm off to bed to steal a couple hours of sleep before the big trip. I'll be writing next time from the Deep South!

Hey Matt,
Sounds like your work there has been a lot different than your work at the Tech Desk! Good luck to you all - I'll be interested to read everyone's posts.
