To snap or not to snap

This morning, we all piled on the bus again and got a tour of Ciudad Sandino and Nueva Vida. It was mostly a drive-through because it is too dangerous to get out and walk around. Some of us feel torn about taking pictures. On one hand, we want you to see what we are seeing in order to understand the depth and breadth of poverty, and the need for everyone to help in his or her own way. But the people lingering in the doorways and picking through garbage in the dump are not photo ops. They are our fellow human beings who have lost much hope and most of their dignity. It seems intrusively rude to stick cameras in their faces. But document it we must. So, we try to do that with respect and sensitivity.

We did make one stop at a market where we got off the bus and walked around for a few minutes. I bought a T-shirt for about two dollars and because it was so cheap, I would have felt inexcusably greedy had I tried to dicker. So maybe the shopkeeper felt like she pulled one over on a gringa, but that's okay. She made the sale, I gave her some money to help support her and her family, and besides that it is a nice T-shirt so we all won that hand.

The food here is wonderful, and plentiful. I don't usually eat bananas, but those little tiny ones are so sweet and delicious. We were served a scrumptious breakfast consisting of the best scrambled eggs I have eaten in years, along with rice and beans, and a lovely array of fresh fruit.

Las brigadistas are relaxing now, some are swimming in the pool, a few are resting, and I can hear Mike W. of JHC talking with others. Our hosts are very gracious in answering our probably sometimes silly questions, and clearly they want us to learn about Nicaragua and its people.

I think I will go rest before lunch. The bunks are slightly more comfortable than a bed of nails, so I have some sleeping to catch up on! We head for Managua after lunch and my fellow bloggers probably will comment on that this evening.

Saludos, todos, y hasta manana.

Bud:

Hi Candice,

I meant to tell you before you left: try to grab a top bunk directly under one of the fans! That's Janice Butler's advice from the past.

Love the posts - looking forward to hearing more about your trip and travels.

Bud
