T-minus one week!

One week from tomorrow I will be in Nicaragua! I can't believe that the time has finally arrived. For the last six months, Nicaragua has occupied my thoughts and my energies, and most of my correspondences as well, perhaps to the chagrin of my family and friends who would like to hear about the rest of my life.

The preparation has been interesting. Had to find bug spray in February...got the shots (what did you say? typhoid fever?), filled out the papers, dug out the backpack...listened to the cautions about scorpions in my shoes and other charms of the tropics...decided to go anyway...made copious notes for my children, which they will promptly discard as I walk out the door...climbed the steep (for me) learning curve of technology and borrowed a digital camera...received and issued more instructions than would fit into the Congressional Record...worked on my Spanish...¿donde esta el bano por favor?...no, no tengo las drogas, senor..it still needs a lot of work...and counted the months and then the weeks and now the days!

Next week will be blur of activity, so I will talk to you from Nicaragua...scorpions in my shoes?...
